IYENGAR YOGA

This methodical and progressive form was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar using a combination of Hatha and Raja yoga. It is based on the ancient Indian traditions of classical Ashtanga yoga as defined by Pantanjali in the Yoga Sutras. In Iyengar yoga, focus is placed on strength, flexibility, balance, concentration and meditation. Clear and specific instruction is given. The use of props was developed by Mr. Iyengar to make poses accessible for all. The quest for inner consciousness begins with physical awareness. Awareness in the pose becomes meditation in action.

In his book Light on Yoga, Mr. Iyengar writes “Asanas (poses) have been evolved over the centuries so as to exercise every muscle, nerve and gland in the body. They secure a fit physique which is strong and elastic without being muscle-bound and they keep the body free from disease. They reduce fatigue and soothe the nerves. But their real importance lies in the way they train and discipline the mind”.

KRIPALU YOGA

Developed by Amrit Desai, Kripalu is a form of Hatha yoga where the body is experienced as a doorway to higher consciousness. In addition to paying special attention to alignment, awareness of the breath and Pranayama are also taught. Kripalu focuses on the experience of learning through witness and developing awareness of the self in the posture.

Note: Pranayama techniques differ in these two methods.
