The practice of yoga develops strength and flexibility, and improves coordination and balance, while promoting overall health. Through the practice of yoga we gain the intelligence required to bring peace and contentment to our lives. We learn to still the mind through the practice of the yoga.
Mr. Iyengar says, in his Light on Yoga, “Asanas (poses) have been evolved over the centuries so as to exercise every muscle, nerve and gland in the body. They secure a fit physique which is strong and elastic without being muscle-bound and they keep the body free from disease. They reduce fatigue and soothe the nerves. But their real importance lies in the way they train and discipline the mind.”
The Katha Upanishads states “When all the senses are stilled, when the mind is at rest, when the intellect wavers not-that, say the wise, is the highest state.”

Iyengar Yoga is a form of Hatha and Raja yoga combined and developed by B.K.S. Iyengar. This methodical and progressive yoga is based on the ancient Indian traditions of classical Ashtanga Yoga, as defined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. In Iyengar yoga, strength, flexibility, balance, concentration and meditation are learned. The quest for inner consciousness begins with physical awareness. Clear and specific instructions are given. The use of props was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar to make poses accessible for everyone. Awareness in the pose becomes meditation in action.
Kripalu Yoga is a form of Hatha yoga developed by Amrit Desai, where the body is experienced as a doorway to higher consciousness, with special attention to alignment. Attention to breath and Pranayama are also taught. Kripalu focuses on the experience of learning through witnessing and developing awareness of the self in the posture.
Note: pranayama techniques differ in these two methods.
